When You Don’t Have to Fix the Conflict
In relationship conflict, we often focus on trying to change the other person's emotional state. But caring about how your partner feels is different from taking responsibility for making them feel better. Sometimes the healthier response is to take responsibility for your part, ask what your partner needs, and learn to tolerate what you cannot control. There is a strange contradiction in many relationship conflicts: we can spend enormous amounts of energy trying to control something that is not ours to control, while neglecting the things that are. A partner is upset with us, and our attention turns toward their emotional state. We want them to calm down. We want them to understand what we meant. We want them to stop being disappointed, angry, anxious, or hurt. We search for the right explanation, the right words. We try to get the situation back to a place where everyone feels okay.
